Tired of reading HTML books that only make sense after you’re an expert? Then it’s about time you picked up Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML and really learned HTML. You want to learn HTML so you can finally create those web pages you’ve always wanted, so you can communicate more effectively with friends, family, fans, and fanatic customers. You also want to do it right so you can actually maintain and expand your Web pages over time, and so your web pages work in all the browsers and mobile devices out there. Oh, and if you’ve never heard of CSS, that’s okay–we won’t tell anyone you’re still partying like it’s 1999–but if you’re going to create Web pages in the 21st century then you’ll want to know and understand CSS.

Learn the real secrets of creating Web pages, and why everything your boss told you about HTML tables is probably wrong (and what to do instead). Most importantly, hold your own with your co-worker (and impress cocktail party guests) when he casually mentions how his HTML is now strict, and his CSS is in an external style sheet.

With Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML, you’ll avoid the embarrassment of thinking web-safe colors still matter, and the foolishness of slipping a font tag into your pages. Best of all, you’ll learn HTML and CSS in a way that won’t put you to sleep. If you’ve read a Head First book, you know what to expect: a visually-rich format designed for the way your brain works. Using the latest research in neurobiology, cognitive science, and learning theory, this book will load HTML, CSS, and XHTML into your brain in a way that sticks.

So what are you waiting for? Leave those other dusty books behind and come join us in Webville. Your tour is about to begin.

Praise
Elegant design is at the core of every chapter here, each concept conveyed with equal doses of pragmatism and wit.
–Ken Goldstein, Executive Vice President, Disney Online

This book is a thoroughly modern introduction to forward-looking practices in web page markup and presentation.
–Danny Goodman, author of Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Guide

What used to be a long trial and error learning process has now been reduced neatly into an engaging paperback.
–Mike Davidson, CEO, Newsvine, Inc.

I love Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML–it teaches you everything you need to learn in a ‘fun coated’ format! -
-Sally Applin, UI Designer and Artist

I haven’t had as much fun reading a book (other than Harry Potter) in years. And your book finally helped me break out of my hapless so-last-century way of creating web pages.
–Professor David M. Arnow, Department of Computer and Information Science, Brooklyn College

If you’ve ever had a family member who wanted you to design a website for them, buy them Head First HTML with CSS and XHTML. If you’ve ever asked a family member to design you a web site, buy this book. If you’ve ever bought an HTML book and ended up using it to level your desk, or for kindling on a cold winter day, buy this book. This is the book you’ve been waiting for. This is the learning system you’ve been waiting for.

HTML FOR THE COMPUTER NOVICE
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This text is somewhat difficult for the computer novice. However it does take one very slowly through the steps required to start writting code. The explanations areclear and straight forward. For learning how to write code for the web, this is the place to start.

I’m very much a beginner when it comes to HTML, and this book was really good for me.

Adequate

The book is a bit too “cutesy” for me, but it at least helped me to create a web site from scratch which I was never able to do before, including cascading style sheets. So for newbs, it’s pretty good. Sometimes it drags on when I want to just get to the point, but it got the job done.

I was 100% sure I would not be able to read this book without falling asleep. WRONG! Tremendous book. Ultra well organized for learning from scratch. A book for beginners, although an advanced user could get through it quickly and learn something. Highest possible rating!!!!

Best Shortcut to Inherent Knowledge of CSS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am an old designer dog that learned HTML by viewing other’s source code way back in 1995. Then the web evolved and new tricks needed to be learned. Tables and spacer gifs made sense in a twisted design workaround, but CSS was my waterloo. It would not stick to my teflon brain… until I stumbled upon this book… (originally, in online form as an inducement to subscribing to a service). Once I realized how invaluable it was to my understanding of all things HTML and CSS, I made a beeline to Amazon for the deadtree version. I sat down the day it arrived and read it straight through. The style of teaching fundamentals is fun, playful, and extremely edifying – without making your brain bleed. I dare say, I filled in some gaps in my own old school DIY HTML know-how. You won’t know you’re learning and grasping and grokking the whole enchilada. This book is devious and wonderful in that way. I could go on and on, better yet, stop reading this, get yourself a copy and become a better web designer overnight. Then you can play with us Big Dogs!

Excellent Book
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
What a brilliant way to teach complex concepts! When I started reading this book I knew very little about HTML and CSS, only a few bits I picked up from a programmer who worked for me for a lot of weekly cash. By the time I’ve finished reading the book, my former programmer was paying me for consulting him on HTML and CSS! True story. This book proved to be a great monetary and intellectual investment.

Wonderful first HTML/CSS book!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m a C/Java coder who’s been getting into web designing as a hobby. I have to say, the approach the Head First folks took with this book seemed a little unconventional at first, but after I’d devoured the first 200 pages and hardly felt like I was breaking a mental sweat I realized: it works! The authors are thorough, accurate, and enjoyable to read, and the material builds a great and easy-to-understand foundation before it takes you right into the realm of building valid XHTML. I’m a little old to relate to all the “hipsters” featured as characters in the book, but they do make the material that much more engaging, and add an element of fun to the projects. Those projects are non-trivial, and result in your learning to code some pretty nice web pages–and the authors do a fine job of presenting alternate methods to achieve similar results and are honest about the shortcomings of each.

I highly recommend this as your first book on programming HTML/CSS! I’ve ordered the Head First Javascript and PHP volumes for my further learning experiences.

Great Book for learning HTML and CSS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am using this book for my 2nd class in a row in learning HTML and CSS in a Junior College class. The book is written in such a form that it is easy reading, complete with exercises to use. This is a great book to have to learn HTML & CSS from the hands on exercises.

This is my first book from the Head First line and it will not be my last. They do an excellent job of translating all the techno stuff to more layman’s terms. I considered myself to be decent with HTML before I bought this book, but even this book taught me things I never really knew and I was surprised at that. I would recommend this book for beginners but even if you think you know it all this book might surprise you.

Best book I ever purchased
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this book 6 months back, and was very satisfied with it. The only people that are giving this bad reviews are the professionals or those who are more familiar with HTML than a beginner. This book is purely for beginners. Every lesson is introduced in a steady paced format. The pictures and drawings make the learning fun and helps you grasp all of the material.

I wish most technical books were written in this format. It is EXTREMELY reader friendly, and you start understanding complicated aspects of HTML within the first few chapters. Something that many technical books fail to accomplish. I wish I can give this book more than 5 stars, but I can’t. This book makes web programming fun! And if you love what you do, you should be able to have fun learning it too!

Great for Beginners to Novices
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
While I took issue with the Head First PHP MySQL book, I gave this book on (X)HTML and CSS a chance and couldn’t be happier. Over a break from school I flew through this book and feel like I really understand and can recall most of the information. While it starts with HTML 4.01 and some seemingly childish metaphors that may bore you, if you go through the entire book it will all fall into place. I was having a hard time learning CSS on my own and the DOCTYPE stuff with the HTML was something I just couldn’t figure out. This takes all of the thinking out of it by simply explaining that “You do this once, and then copy/pasta into your documents as you go”.

Something I was worried about was being required to follow the examples as I went through. If you don’t feel like downloading and messing around with their example sites (which are VERY good, by the way), it’s easy enough to create a simple personal webpage (I put a CV, links to my twitter, things a potential employer might be interested in) and just follow along.

The short of it: This book is definitely for someone with minimal web design experience. If you don’t know the difference between a div and a span, or what an element is. If you have never looked at a stylesheet or still are not sure what the cascade is. If you want to feel like someone is teaching you personally, this recreates the effect very well. You’ll learn the very bottom-basics about XHTML and web standards and CSS, then move up to designing professional looking web pages in the vein of corporate america as well as hip, chic small businesses. This book will get you up to speed quickly and correctly.

A Great Introduction to HTML and CSS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have read HTML books in the distant past, but I really haven’t kept up with the times and I have forgotten more than I remember. Maybe that is an advantage. With this book, I was able to set down and learn HTML, CSS and XHTML in a step-by-step hands-on fashion. The book seems little crazy and goofy at first. I knew that going into it after reading the reviews here. I have to admit that there is a method to their madness. I was able follow along in the examples and get a basic working knowledge of ways that modern web pages are put together. I wanted to better understand the differences between HTML, XHTML and how does CSS work. This book did that for me.It is a great introduction and I found myself looking forward to each chapter.

I’m glad I bought it!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book is a true step by step (X)HTML/CSS manual. It is written in very clear, novice friendly manner. Don’t be fooled by all those pictures and dialogs – they are there for a reason and definitely do their job. Along with the friendly presentation of the material, the authors succeeded in teaching some very important fundamental (X)HTML/CSS concepts, and that, without a doubt, improves the quality of knowledge one will gain from this book.

It will be hard to find a better book for a beginner, so if you are one – do yourself a favor and buy this book.

I’m giving it 5 stars!

Head First HTML w/CSS&XTHML
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I was a bit intimidated by the concept of “learning” to write code for websites. It just seemed too complex to understand without any previous training or education in that field. The book starts out by telling me how they developed the book and why I should read everything and do the homework at the end of each chapter. In this book… if ya wanna get it… ya have ta do the HOMEWORK! But the homework is actually easy and fun. I have had ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) all my life and this book works for me! It keeps my attention and engages me by allowing me build and work with web pages from the very first chapter. I did not think that I would actually start writing code and looking at the results in the first chapter! It was rewarding to see the results. Gosh… I love that Starbuzz Coffee Page!!!!

If you know almost NOTHING about web design/development and are intimidated by the idea of “writing code”… This book is for you ~~ Joe

I’m gonna be the 234th person to give this book 5*
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Great book for beginners, incredibly thorough, full of illustrations and examples to get you engulfed in HTML quickly and efficiently.

This book is also a great starting point for anyone whose looking to better comprehend the internet, how everything works online, how to build a website from scratch, and where to move once you have mastered HTML.

I personally would’ve liked less puzzles and scrabble games along the way, just thought it was superfluous at times. However, that’s just my personal opinion, and it evidently hasn’t affected my appreciation for this book whatsoever.

Remarkable Results
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am not sure whether I am supposed to be reviewing the product or the supplier. However the book is a diamond, very satisfying to work through. I have been averaging a chapter a day and feel confident that I will have a great website in a matter of 6 weeks if I can find time to put the work in. You will need further input on images so Photo shop or equivalent particularly to be able to work with transparency. The Book arrived in a timely fashion and was packaged well so arrived in mint condition. It is a ground roots up approach not a reference guide.

Good book, nice visual style, kind of jumps around on the topics, though.

Presents the information well, helps you make simple, solid, styled websites.

Great for beginners.

Not much on dynamic content, maybe try this: Head First JavaScript

Head First Series………EXCELLENT!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The book’s training style really takes into account the way a person learns. The authors do a great job of conveying the info in a way that will allow you to absorb and fully understand the info that you’re getting. Its all meat and no fluff. They know what they’re talking about, are willing to share info, and they care about how a person takes in theinfo (they talk about it in the book….at length). EXCELLENT…..EXCELLENT…..EXCELLENT.

Easy, Fun, and A great way to get started.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
If you are new to HTML this is the book to get. I come from the print design world and many in my industry fear code like its an alien language, but its not. Its one of the funnest tools you’ll ever be fortunate enough to use and this book presents it in a fun and easy way you will remember. Don’t let its size scare you off either, you’re getting your moneys worth and many of the pages are filled with fun little doodle exercises or word puzzles. If you need to know HTML you need this book.

HeadFirst HTML – easy & informative
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Like most of the Head First books, this is very readable and has lots of information to help understand the “why” behind the technology.

For some, the 1st couple of chapters may be too much of an “idiot’s guide” but overall, the book is really good for if you want to understand how to write good HTML, XHTML and CSS.

Note: if you are looking for language reference book, this is not the right choice.

Easy to Understand and REMEMBER HTML and CSS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I created my first web pages in early 1995, typing HTML into a Notepad file, long before CSS was invented. Now my skills are rusty, and web standards have changed. I’ve looked at several other HTML and CSS guides, but this one is the best. Unlike many other books on these same topics, this book is remarkably easy to understand, which means I’ll know how to apply what I’m learning to new situations in the future. Yes, the book is “fun” but that’s what makes the explanations and exercises memorable. Furthermore, the Head First series makes a point of issuing revised texts as standards continue to evolve. This proves that technical writing does not have to be boring. Thank you, Freemans!

I am a SharePoint Administrator and in the past my role was to manage the back end of the server and now I am forced to take care of the front end as well. I had very limted knowledge of web development so I wanted a book that can teach me HTML from the beginning and this book did it. Once I picked up the book, I could not put it down because it was so easy to read, understand end best of all it was so much fun. I am even considering changing my career to become a developer. LOL

Awesome tutorial
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Eric & Elisabeth Freeman are terrific authors! I learned more relevant and up-to-date techniques from this book than I did from taking an HTML class at my community college. HeadFirst HTML with CSS & XHTML is written in a logical order that is very clear and easy to follow, with many checkpoints along the way to make sure you don’t get too far off track. They don’t just spew data at you; they explain things and give you exercises that help you remember the information. Even at over 650 pages I was able to breeze through it in about a week. I would not suggest getting HeadFirst PHP & MySQL however, as the authors of that book aren’t anywhere near as good as Eric & Elisabeth.

This book does a good job of entertaining while teaching a dry subject. The authors really put effort into holding your attention and interest. I would recommend it to anyone trying to learn the web.
